How to Choose a Tarot Reader: What to Look for Before You Book
How to Choose a Tarot Reader That Feels Right for You

You're not simply choosing someone who knows the meanings of 78 cards. You may be talking to this person about relationships, family, career decisions, uncertainty, grief, personal patterns or parts of your life you don't normally discuss with strangers.
So, before you book a tarot reading, it's worth taking a little time to decide whether the reader—and their approach—actually feels right for you.
Here are some things Carmel-Anne from Soulfully Guided recommends considering.
1. Don't feel pressured into booking immediately
You should never feel obligated to book a reading simply because you've contacted a reader, watched one of their videos or asked them a question. Your time, money and energy are valuable.
A professional reader should respect your decision about whether, when and with whom you choose to have a reading.
Be particularly cautious about pressure-based approaches designed to create urgency or fear.
You should have space to make your own decision.
2. Look at how the reader actually works
Before booking, spend some time looking beyond the booking button.
(Even if briefly), read their website. Look through their social media. Watch their videos or live readings if they're available.
Read reviews from previous clients.
This can tell you considerably more than a polished biography.
Ask yourself:
Do I like the way this person communicates?
Do I feel comfortable with their approach?
Does their style suit (and offer) what I'm actually looking for?
One reader may be gentle and spiritual. Another may be practical and direct. Some focus heavily on prediction, while others use tarot as a tool for reflection, decision-making and exploring patterns.
Different doesn't necessarily mean better or worse.
It means different readers suit different people.
3. Know what you want from your tarot reading
You don't need to have perfectly formulated questions before you book.
But it can help to think about what you're hoping to get from the experience.
Are you looking for reassurance?
Clarity about a particular situation?
A different perspective?
Help understanding why something keeps happening?
Guidance about your available options?
Or perhaps you don't have a specific question at all and simply want to see what comes through.
If you do have particular questions, check whether the reader is comfortable exploring them before you book.
4. Check the reader's ethical boundaries
One of the things I recommend looking for is a Code of Ethics or another clear explanation of the reader's professional boundaries.
What will they read on?
What won't they read on?
How do they approach questions involving third parties?
How do they handle sensitive subjects?
What happens if something falls outside the scope of a tarot reading?
Clear boundaries aren't a limitation on a good reading
They're often a sign that the reader has actually thought about their responsibility(and duty of care) to the people sitting across from them, booking their services.
At Soulfully Guided, I publish my own Code of Ethics so clients can understand those boundaries before deciding whether I'm the right reader for them.

5. Pay attention to how the reader makes you feel
Qualifications, experience and reviews can all be useful—but don't completely disregard your own reaction to someone.
You may find an extremely popular reader whose style simply doesn't suit you.
That's okay.
You need to feel comfortable enough to be fully present and participate honestly in the reading, ask questions and say when something does—or doesn't—make sense.
For me, a tarot reading shouldn't be a performance where the client has to sit silently while the reader proves how psychic they are. Sometimes the most psychic things that can be said are what you already know.
BUT, It's your reading.
You should be able to participate in it.
6. Look for transparency
Before paying, you should be able to understand what you're purchasing.
Look for clear information about things such as the length of the reading, price, how the session takes place, cancellation or rescheduling conditions and what happens if technical problems occur.
If something important isn't clear, ask before you book.
A quick email or message can sometimes tell you quite a lot about how a business communicates with its clients.
7. Read reviews—but look beyond the star rating
Reviews can be valuable when choosing a tarot reader, particularly when you look for recurring themes rather than focusing on one spectacular testimonial.
What do different clients repeatedly mention?
Accuracy?
Compassion?

Directness?
Feeling comfortable?
Leaving with greater clarity?
Being given practical guidance?
Those patterns can give you an idea of what the experience may actually be like.
Where possible, I also recommend looking at reviews on independent platforms rather than relying solely on testimonials selected by the business itself.
8. A good tarot reading should still leave you with your own choices
This is particularly important to me.
I don't believe a tarot reader should take control of your decisions.
A reading can explore what's happening, identify patterns, consider influences and look at the potential consequences of different choices.
It can give you another perspective.
It can sometimes tell you something you already knew but weren't quite ready to acknowledge.
But ultimately, your life remains yours.
That's why one of the principles behind the way I read is:
The cards show the pattern.
YOU choose what happens next.
So, how do you find the right tarot reader?
Do a little research.
Ask questions.
Look at their ethics.
Read their reviews.
Understand what you're paying for.
Pay attention to whether their communication style resonates with you.
And don't assume that the reader who's right for somebody else must automatically be right for you.
A tarot reading can involve remarkably personal conversations. Choosing someone you feel comfortable working with is worth the extra few minutes of research before you hit Book.
My approach at Soulfully Guided
My readings combine tarot, pyschic and intuitive insight with observation, questioning and pattern analysis.
I'm interested not only in what may be happening, but also why a pattern may be occurring and how you can respond to it.
I'll give you my interpretation, explore the options with you and, where appropriate, help you develop practical next steps.
What you decide to do with that information remains entirely yours.
You ask WHAT & WILL. I explore WHY & HOW.

That's your Tarot Tea for the day. Take what resonates. Trust what fits.
Stay Soulfully Guided.
